Form 8 delivered a heart felt assembly this morning to an audience made up of the whole school plus their parents. We enjoyed the ‘guess the baby’ game but the tone changed when Form 8 stood up and shared challenges they had faced and overcome with the support of their friends and teachers.

The closeness and empathy between the class members was noticeable and it proved to be an emotional assembly. The humour soon returned with a section on their funniest memories and I must thank Mrs Fernley, their tutor, for helping Form 8 put this together. As a reward, afterwards, parents and pupils were treated to a delicious breakfast!

Each year Sunninghill enter the Young Writer Competition which is run by the Dorchester Casterbridge Rotary. Their president, Roy Chapman, along with Rachel Wilson, came into assembly today to present some awards.

In the Junior level competition, Gregory V was awarded a Commended certificate.

In the Intermediate level competition, Lucy C in Form 7, along with Theo S, Amelia F, Martha B, Archie G, Sam H, Charlie D and Ben E in Form 8 were all awarded a Commended certificate.

Alex B in Form 7 was pleased to be awarded the overall runner-up certificate. He also received a prize which was a voucher for Waterstones.

We were delighted to hear that the overall winner was our very own Felix S in Form 8. In addition to a certificate and vouchers he was also awarded an impressive trophy for the school to keep for the year. I have already put it in our trophy cabinet!

The examiner was very impressed with Felix’s story and made the following comments: ‘From an arresting first sentence this held our interest throughout. It makes excellent use of dialogue as the characters realise how what they’re doing impacts on the environment. The tension builds with the mysterious apparition which leads to a powerful conclusion. This is a very good piece of writing.’

Congratulations to everyone involved!

Form 8 have an exciting week next week when they leave for Bristol airport at 3.30am on Sunday for their Residential to Spain!

Let’s hope this good weather holds for the weekend.
