Happy New Year and welcome back to all our Sunninghill Community!

It has been lovely to see you all after the Christmas break – and it has been lovely to catch up with our children and hear all about your holidays. It sounds like everyone had a super break! In our assembly this week we welcomed Star back to the prep school and this month we also welcome lots of new children to our ever expanding nursery.

In our assemblies this week we have covered two themes. The first was reminding ourselves that we need to see the children before we teach them. This is so important that we seek to understand each other and helps us to be compassionate which is, as you know, one of our core values in school. Today in assembly, we talked about the Fundamental British Values and discussed the importance of working together to help make sure we all have a voice, we have the freedom to be who we want to be (provided it does not cause any harm to others), we are fair and we understand the importance of the rules that keep us safe.

Our well done winners this week were Yasmin, Star, Penelope and Logan. We also congratulated Nikolas, Sophia, Jia Wei, Anna and Ted for some excellent results in their recent music theory exams.

This week we also welcomed our new Heads of School, Sasha and Sophia, who we know will provide wonderful support to myself and all the staff at Sunninghill, and will be great role models to the rest of the school. Congratulations to you both. Thank you also to Lottie and Felix for their amazing work as Heads of School in the Autumn Term.

On Tuesday, Form 3 visited the Tutankhamun Exhibition in Dorchester to kick-start their Spring Term topic, Ancient Egypt. The children discovered fascinating facts about Tutankhamun’s family and learned how he became Pharaoh at such a young age. They explored impressive reconstructions of his burial chamber and marvelled at the treasures he was buried with. The children had a wonderful time and asked thoughtful, insightful questions about Egyptian gods and goddesses, as well as the many artefacts on display. What a fantastic and inspiring start to the Spring Term!

Yesterday, we were lucky enough to welcome the Mayor and Mayoress of Dorchester – Andy Canning and Mel Lane. They came to speak to the children about their roles and functions and about the Dorchester Town Council. They spoke about the jobs in the council, all of the good volunteering work that happens in our community and the growth of the Youth Town Council. The children really enjoyed asking them questions and were particularly fascinated by the large chain that Andy wears as part of his role!

We are thrilled to announce the results of the Teasel and Skylark Christmas traditions poetry competition:
Connor (Form 7) has been crowned Winner in the Secondary Age Group, winning a £20 Teasel & Skylark voucher.
Finlay (Form 7) and Lottie (Form 8) achieved Runner-Up in the Secondary Age Group, winning a £10 Teasel & Skylark voucher.
They all did exceptionally well among a large number of entries – a fantastic achievement. The Town Crier (one of the judges) has recorded their poems and these recordings, along with photos of their poems, have been shared on Teasel and Skylark’s website and social media. Congratulations again to Connor, Lottie and Finlay, we are so proud of you!
On Monday 12th January we will also be taking Violet, Beau, Lilia and Finlay to the DOMVS Storyhouse Writing Competition presentation evening. They have all been shortlisted and we look forward to finding out their results.

We have so much to look forward to this term – including the PTFA Burns Night on Saturday 17th January, our whole school disco in February and Sunninghill’s Got Talent on 20th March to name a few. The children’s clubs start next week, but they have already been enjoying some fantastic 4C’s lessons and enrichment that includes powerboating, skiing, cookery and a new sustainability project. What lucky children!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone.

David
