For a Sports teacher the second half of term is certainly one of the most vibrant parts of the year! We were very fortunate to be able to host our sports day and swimming gala events this year. Due to the Covid-19 restrictions we had to arrange more events so that we could still invite all our parents to watch their sporting stars. These events can only take place if the facilities are ready. I must thank Les and Ray unreservedly for preparing the ground so beautifully, especially our new running track for the Reception lap race which is located on the field next to the top lawn.
We had 4 individual sports days; Nursery and Reception, Forms 1 and 2, Forms 3 and 4 and Forms 5 and 8. Pupils were well prepared and gave it their best. Events were competitive with children pushing each other on, right to the finish line. From Form 3 onwards the Sports day events count towards the overall Athletics Inter-House Competition. It has been a real joy to start our Inter-house events again after such a long time out. It was also a pleasure to see the seniors support the younger athletes and show them how much the house competitions mean to them. After a hard fought battle, Frome prevailed and won the Inter-House Athletics competition.
Our swimming gala was also a great success. We had a staggered Reception to Form 4 Swimming Gala and a Senior Swimming Gala. The pupils have worked so hard this term to develop their swimming strokes and certainly put on a splendid performance. The youngest swimmers completed a range of width races whilst the older swimmers swam lengths. We saw some impressive relays but also some sensational individual performances, especially in Form 7/8! The Inter-House swimming cup was on offer for the highest scoring team which made it very competitive! It was a pleasure to watch so many children perform well in front of their parents and peers. Pupils supported each other really well and should be proud of their performances. A huge well done to Maumbury for winning the Inter-House Swimming Cup.
These events can only be a success with participants and spectators. I must congratulate all the pupils for trying their best and displaying excellent performances. Their support and team work towards each other was sensational.
The spectators were also on fine form! All the children were supported with loud cheers and applause which only encouraged them to push themselves to their limits. Thanks must also go to the parents for their patience with the social distancing measures we had put in place. It enabled us to enjoy our sports days together.
A final thank you goes to my colleagues for their help and support throughout the sports days and swimming galas.
These events really highlight the close school community feel to me at Sunninghill and make me feel immensely proud to be part of our school.
Wishing you all a lovely and active Summer!
